Diagnosing Houseplant Problems

tropical-houseplant Some of our customers are way too kind to their houseplants.

The problems we are most likely to run into are over watering and over fertilizing.

Here is a little guide to help you diagnose any problems you may be having with your own houseplants.

New growth that is elongated or pale may mean too little light.
Leaves that are mottled brown and/or yellow and faded looking may mean too much light.
Leaves and stems look wilted or shriveled, any new growth is weak or yellowish may mean too much fertilizer.
Leaves turn yellowish with green veins. Lower leaves drop off may mean too little fertilizer.
Plant looks great but leaf tips are brown may mean fluoridated water.
If leaf tips turn brown and lower leaves turn yellow and fall off it may mean over watering. Turn the pot over and gently tap it out if you can, turn over and inspect the root if the roots are soggy or rotted it is a sure sign of over watering.
If things are moving ,you’ve got bugs! Treat as soon as possible before thaey spread to your other plants.

For the majority of houseplants you can follow this golden rule of watering:
Water the plant thoroughly till the water runs out the bottom. Don’t let it set in water .
Don’t water again until it feels dry on top.

In Loving Memory

Today we honor our beloved dead. Nowadays folk think this is a day just for fallen veterans. Not so! Like  the Mexican Days of the Dead, whole families used to go to the cemetery to cleanup grave markers and lay or plant flowers and leave mementos. It was widely known as Decoration Day. In many places this is still the case.

The local papers have articles of interest The Vindicator reports of a local man who died in WWII falling from a plane in the Netherlands.

I think it’s cool that that the local folk in Zwolle  erected a monument to the plane that avoided their town. It’s nice that they can appreciate what a bunch of foreigners did for them so long ago. I sometimes wonder if   Proud Americans can do the same.

The Trib reports that Monument Park down by the Log Cabin is still evolving. They are collecting pictures and biographies of local veterans , hoping to start a Web Site with that information. I’ll post the link here when they get it set up.

Buy Local Flowers

It’s usually best to use a local “Brick and Mortar” flower shop that actually delivers in the area you want to send flowers to rather than an internet or phone “order gather” middleman.

Here is a TV news video that shows you why.

It’s about Mother’s Day but the information is useful everyday.

All about the Bees

Leon Kreitzman has a fascinating article over at the New York Times Blogging section. It’s all about the natural rhythms bees and flowers have developed in relationship to each other and the circadian clock.

I encourage you to read this if you are at all interested and then head on over to Morning Sunshine to play Bubble Bees. I adore that Game!

White House Florist

wakeupusa

Top White House florist Nancy Clarke is leaving after 31 years designing for the Reagans, both Bushes, the Clintons and the Carters.  It seems like a sweet gig for some enterprising young florist. I wonder what style the Obamas would enjoy most?

Happy Secretaries’ Week or Whatever.

forall-youdo2Next Week , April 19th  through the 25th has been known as Secretaries’  Week,  Administrative Professional’s Week and Assistant’s Week. It used to be just Secretaries’ Week  but hardly anybody calls themselves a secretary anymore. It’s all Data Processing or Medical Records or Assistant to the Executive Grand Pooh-bah of Departmental Managerial Accounts.

Whatever you call them, someone has   to cross all the Ts and dot the I s, organize and file all the little bits of information that make up the daily business of life.  Whether it’s that nice lady at the doctor’s office that helped you with all that crazy insurance stuff or when your son   helped you with the invoices for your small business, give them some thanks.

We hope you say it with flowers but,  if not , say it anyway.

In lieu of no more

Our customers express sympathy for friends, family and co-workers in a variety of ways The practice of giving flowers has been a part of nearly every civilization’s culture since before recorded history.

Research from Harvard and Rutgers shows that flowers increase feelings of compassion and people feel less anxious and depressed in their presence.

Calling Hours and Memorial Services without flowers leave friends and loved ones without a visible way of expressing  condolences.

Beautiful flowers symbolize a beautiful life well lived.

People who want to honor loved ones with charitable contributions rarely want a funeral devoid of flowers. Please consider requesting that your funeral director not use the negative term “In lieu of flowers” in the obituary notice and replace it with “ The family requests material contributions be made to …” or some other positive phrase.
